Kansas
vehicle bill of sale.

Kansas publishes TR-312 to record a vehicle’s purchase price. Its special ownership-transfer section is limited to qualifying antique-vehicle situations. For other vehicles sold by or purchased from a Kansas resident, the form directs users to transfer ownership through an assigned title.

Which ownership document applies?

For a standard used-vehicle transfer, Kansas’ titling instructions call for a title assigned to the new owner. The assignment includes sale, mileage and signature information; lien releases can also be required.

TR-312’s antique section concerns vehicles at least 35 model years old in the specified no-title situation. An out-of-state seller may need to follow their own state’s transfer rules. Do not treat the age threshold as a complete eligibility check.

Check the county process before handing over documents.

Kansas directs title and registration applications to the county treasurer where the vehicle is garaged. The state’s general guidance gives a 60-day application window to avoid penalties.

Inspection requirements can depend on an out-of-state title or sale and the antique-vehicle circumstances. Check the current used-vehicle instructions with the county office before your visit. The bill of sale is only one part of that application.

Questions, answered.

Can I transfer any Kansas vehicle using only TR-312?+

No. The form distinguishes the limited antique-vehicle ownership route from transfers that require an assigned title.

Does a Kansas bill of sale need notarization?+

The Division of Vehicles says most bills of sale completed within Kansas do not need notarization, but it can require notarized documents in unusual circumstances. Other paperwork, such as certain lien documents, has its own rules.

What if the title has no purchase-price field?+

Kansas’ title FAQ points to the bill-of-sale portion on page two of TR-12 for that situation. Follow that instruction instead of assuming TR-312 replaces every supporting form.

Where do I apply for title and registration?+

Use the county treasurer’s motor vehicle office for the county where the vehicle is garaged. Check its instructions for your documents and any required inspection before attending.
